RMC’s AHIMA Approved ICD-10 Trainers meet multiple times per week fielding questions from clients and staff.  Below is an actual question that was submitted, along with our team’s response. *

CODING QUESTION:  Newborn (11 days old), ED visit, with Final dx:  “Bleeding from wound” and “Circumcision complication”.

This is also documented under ED course:  “Bleeding at lower left aspect of the circumcision line.  Monsels solution applied and seemed to stop it.  Xeroform re-applied.“  This is documented under exam:  “penis with recent circumcision wound.  There is mild oozing of blood.”  How should I code this?

RMC RESPONSE: Code P96.89 Other specified condition originating in the perinatal period, N99.820 Postprocedure hemorrhage of a genitourinary system organ following a genitourinary system procedure & Y83.8.
