RMC’s AHIMA Approved ICD-10 Trainers meet multiple times per week fielding questions from clients and staff. Below is an actual question that was submitted, along with our team’s response.*
Coding Question: Can you please tell me the difference between Meconium staining in a newborn P96.83, or Meconium passage in a newborn P03.82. When would you use each scenario? Thank you for your help.
RMC’s Answer: The 2 conditions are separate. “staining” indicates a more long-term significant problem. P03.82- is actually meconium passage during delivery. There is an excludes 1 note- you should not report meconium passage with meconium staining unless documentation supports that infant had staining and also passed meconium during delivery.
